What is the Artists-in-Training Activity?

The Artists-in-Training activity is designed to help develop essential employability skills, including dependability, teamwork, following instructions, caring for the work environment, and creative expression. Through learning fine arts techniques, participants create original artwork that can be reproduced and sold at markets, community events, and our storefront.
Training takes place at our south Mississauga training centre. Our professional artists teach insightful fine arts and mixed media art lessons, with guest artists occasionally invited to provide instruction and add further enrichment to the learning experience. |

Outcome Goals
Primary: Mastering the core set of Employability Skills via taking on the projects, tasks and responsibilities involved in the training activity.
Secondary: Demonstration of abilities suitable to earn income as an artist, or as an employee in an art-related setting. These include:
Examples of Skills Taught
Our Visual Arts Social Enterprise
Selected pieces are showcased and marketed through social media, engagement at community events, in the Options Mississauga Training Centre and in the Print and Office Services storefront. Art students receive a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their artwork and related reproductions such as cards, notebooks and calendars.
Cost of the Activity
Weekly classes are $30 each. Participants of the activity may pay to attend additional classes each week depending on availability of spaces.

- Care and handling of art materials
- Comfort and confidence working independently
- Creation of artwork, from idea and concept to finished product
- Production of acrylic paintings for personal use or marketing
Examples of Skills Taught
- Care, handling, preparation and storage of art materials
- Planning and composition of artwork
- Use of the colour wheel and mixing colours
- Use of different paint brush styles and mixed mediums
